Education

Education is compulsory between the ages of
5 through 16. There are 210 schools throughout The Bahamas,
of which the Government maintains 158 and 52 are privately
owned and maintained.

Throughout The Bahamas education is free in all Government
schools. The education system is based on the British.
Recently, some of the private schools have become accredited
by the European Council of International Schools (ECIS)
and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges
(NEASC).

Additionally, some US universities offer higher education
in The Bahamas, namely: The University of Miami, Nova
Southeastern University, and Sojourner Douglas College.
According to the National Let’s Read Bahamas Secretariat,
85% of all Bahamians are literate while 15% cannot read
or write at the sixth-grade level.
Medical
The
Bahamas offers high-quality health care
throughout The Bahamas, through government and privately
owned facilities. The newly appointed
Public Hospital Authority operates three hospitals.
In
Nassau, The Princess Margaret Hospital specializes in
almost every major medical service, ambulatory services
and diagnostic services and is recognized throughout
the U.K. In Freeport, The Rand Memorial Hospital, provides
the basics in medical services and procedures. In addition
to these two government hospitals, the Sandilands Rehabilitation
Center offers psychiatric and geriatric hospital services.
Doctors Hospital, an acute care privately operated hospital
in Nassau, offers all major medical services with state-of-the-art
equipment. In the event of any major medical emergency
or accident, air-ambulance service is available for
all major hospitals in South Florida.
Religion
The
Bahamas is a Christian country. Denominations include
Anglican, Baptist, Christian Science, Greek Orthodox,
Jehovah’s Witness, Jewish, Latter Day Saints,
Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Seventh
Day Adventist. Other Faiths include: Bahai, Islamic,
Muslim and Judaism.
